To Any Business Owner Who Would Like to Make a Huge Impact On The Spiritual Health Of Their Business, Employees And Clients
Dear Business Owner,
I was stunned into action recently when I read this from one of the top guys in Billy Graham’s organization:
“I believe in the next six months to a year, there will be a major explosion in the area of marketplace ministries. …. (workers) need to view their workplace as a way to minister to those who don’t know Christ as their personal Savior.”
That’s when it hit me. I’ve got something that people like me – entrepreneurs in a business environment – could use every day. And, there are millions of people out there who could benefit as a result.
I thought “What a great opportunity for all Christian Entrepreneurs: easily ministering to a hurting and searching sector of the community.“
Christians are struggling with how to live out their Christian faith in the workplace and everywhere else, and you and I can help!
I’ll tell you more about how in a minute, but first, let me tell you a little bit about me and my journey.
I Was In A Similar Position
Not all that long ago, I was in a similar position as hundreds of thousands of my Christian Brothers and Sisters. I was working for a medium sized company and frankly, having a tough time figuring out how to make sense of how to live out of my new-found Christianity.
I thought that the result of living out of my Christianity at work would bring an internal peace. But honestly, it just wasn’t happening for me. Sure, it was easy for me to put on a good face on Sunday morning as I sauntered into my local church. Or, as I was talking with Christian friends and acquaintances outside of my job.
But WORK was a different matter.
You see, it wasn’t that I didn’t want to “make a difference for Christ” in my job. After all, most of the people there were my friends and I genuinely wanted them to have the same thing that I had recently found. But, it was HARD. Really hard. And, I didn’t know how to make it work at work.
Most of us are in a work environment for about 2,000 or more hours per year. (Compare that with the 100 – 200 hours spent at “church.”) And, if most work environments are anything like mine was, it isn’t the type of place or the type of people that make it easy to share your faith.
So there I was, with a burning desire to be a good example, a good deal of “head knowledge” on what I should be doing, and a good deal of guilt that I wasn’t doing it. I didn’t come to a more complete understanding of how to live my life at work the way that I should until I started to study another guy at work.
Now, most typical inspirational stories at this point usually introduce “Super Christian” who leads the new believer from darkness into light by being the perfect example. Well, I’m not like most people, because I found clarity in the life-at-work battles by studying a guy who was doing most things wrong.
Plus, he was my boss. And he was an absolute tyrant with an ego as large as a Greyhound bus and insecurities to match. I didn’t study him in order to emulate him, or so that I could get ahead in my job. I studied him because I had to at first (after all, he was my boss).
Eventually I figured out that I was supposed to be studying him so that I would know the right thing to do: exactly the opposite of what he was doing!
In fact, I studied him so intently that I ended up writing a book about my experiences with him. In the book, I contrasted what he did and said with what the Bible tells us about leadership. I call the book Bleedership, Biblical First-Aid for Leaders and it has struck a chord with thousands of Christian business people in North America.
| Your magazine has been fantastic! I have been struggling with ways to make a difference in the spiritual lives of my employees and some of my clients and your Five Feet Twenty magazine is perfect. Not only is it entertaining, it is packed with Biblical truths that are so good for my employees, clients and me to read every month. I believe it is helping to make better employees and leaders in my company.
And it takes no effort in our office! Thanks so much for providing this! Bob Napierala |
Studying a Negative to Get to a Positive
I don’t recommend this method of studying a negative to get a positive to anybody. There are too many pitfalls in this approach and you can really get off track (or never get on track) by studying a negative influence. However, through this experience, God provided to me some serious insight into life at work.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have it all figured out yet, but I continue to uncover Biblical principles that have really turned my life around. Many of the thousands who have purchased my book have discovered some of those same principles and how to apply them to their work life.
I’ve said in the past that I have a roadmap for people to follow in their work life. But, I must confess that the roadmap is not mine at all. The Word of God is the roadmap. But sometimes business people (like me) need some help understanding the roadmap. So I wrote a book called Bleedership – Biblical First Aid for Leaders.
Even with all the success of the book, I am still convinced that God is not done with me and this idea of Bleedership yet. He has convinced me clearly that while the book is helpful to many, it still is just a book. It is highly likely to be put on the shelf in pretty short order and over time many of principles that were so meaningful to the reader will be lost.
As a result of all of this, I started to write a short monthly magazine. The magazine is a great reminder of how to live the Christian life at work. It is chock full of Biblical advice, real world examples, book reviews and other features that make it a must read month after month. (I used to call this the Bleedership magazine; however, I have since changed its name to Five Feet Twenty. You see, I’m 6′ 8″ tall and I get asked all the time how tall I am. For years I have responded by saying, “five feet twenty,” which really is six feet eight inches. A friend suggested I use that name for my magazine and it stuck!)
That’s why I was so struck by the quote from Billy Graham’s guy. I could take my newsletter and make it available not only to the Entrepreneur himself, but to his employees and valued clients.
Plus, I could even customize every version of the newsletter to include content and material that comes right from you, the entrepreneur. Information from you that is meaningful, useful and will reinforce what is so important to you, your clients and your employees.
Right then and there I decided to put together packages that give Entrepreneurs the opportunity to easily and effectively minister to the men and women that come into their lives all across North America.
Plus, after talking with a few other business owners personally, I realized that most of them are struggling with the same issues and they could learn a thing or two about living out their faith at work as well. Not only will they get to minister to section of their clientele, they’ll learn some stuff for themselves.
| Jim, thanks so much for writing your Five Feet Twenty magazine. It seems that each month when I read it you are speaking directly to me. I sometimes wonder if you are reading my mail and listening to my conversations to come up with your content (LOL).
I am so thankful that my boss provides this for me. Thanks again for what you do—this has really had an impact on me!
